Ok, I thought I would start a blog about women lifting weights/body building in their more mature years! When I started weight lifting for the very first time at the end of 2011, I really didn't realise what I was getting myself in for.
My premise at the beginning of the year was finding a gym, finding a boot camp with mixed gender and close to home, a yoga class at least once a week and some other classes that might interest me. This I did by searching the gyms in my area, and I started out by going to some of the available classes to find out what I enjoyed most.
I made a mental note of when the boot camp started as the weather cooled and I booked in a PT session for the weights. Also at the gym they had a weight technique training session, running every couple of months, which I found to be beneficial If I was going to lift weights, I certainly wanted to do it properly to avoid any sort of injury................ that was something I would be alert about. That was certainly something that I thought could be an issue, unless you took out some PT sessions, how would I know how to lift the weights. My PT I had last year showed me some of the weights and how to lift then, but not all. So the technique session was important.
When I started lifting weights, I googled to find out if there was any information out there for women around my age and how they managed with the weight lifting and also what difference it made to their bodies. How often did they lift weights, what weight lifting program did they do?, were some weights better than others to lift, what weights to start off with? should I be concerned about certain weights to lift more so than others? what shouldn't I be lifting, what supplements did they take, how did it affect their health. All good questions that I really didn't find any answers for. One thing that did stand out, however, is that lifting weights as you age is good for bone density!!
